How should men wear a crossbody bag?

Keep the strap short: the bag should sit at your navel, not bounce off your thigh.

Watch the men waiting for the train on a Tuesday morning: half of them still carry a student backpack, the other half juggle a phone, keys and a wallet across three different pockets. A crossbody bag for men solved that problem years ago, as long as you don't pick one at random. Too big and it looks like a ticket inspector's satchel. Too small and it won't even hold a charger. Set the strap too long and it slaps your hip with every step. Get it right, though, and it becomes the most functional accessory in a city wardrobe, the one you forget you're wearing.

What to know before you buy one:

  • Pick the size from what you actually carry, not from the product photo.
  • Smooth leather dresses up, nylon travels, canvas stays for the weekend.
  • Worn across the chest, the bag should sit at your navel, no lower.
  • Black or dark brown for your first one, matched to your shoes and belt.
  • Expect to spend $70 to $140 on a good nylon bag and $170 to $400 on full-grain leather.

Sling, messenger, belt bag: which crossbody bag are we talking about?

Crossbody describes a way of wearing a bag, not a single design. In shops it covers at least four bags with very different jobs, and mixing them up explains a lot of bad purchases. The sling bag is small and flat, just big enough for a phone, a wallet and keys; the mini versions are often sold as a camera bag. The shoulder bag, wider, swallows a tablet, a notebook and sometimes a 13-inch laptop. The belt bag worn across the chest has become a crossbody in its own right. Then there's the messenger, inherited from bike couriers, which plays in the category above.

My advice, after handling a lot of these: start with a medium sling, roughly 8 by 6 inches. It covers most days and works as well with jeans as with wool trousers. The bigger shoulder bag can come later, if you find you need it.

What size do you need for what you carry?

Empty your pockets onto a table. Really. That small pile is your brief. A recent smartphone is about 6.3 inches tall, so anything under 7 inches of interior height won't take it flat. Add sunglasses in their case and you need 2 inches of depth. A standard tablet calls for about 10 inches of width.

For a laptop, do the maths before deciding. A 13-inch model measures around 12 by 8.3 inches, which means a bag at least 12.5 inches wide with a padded sleeve. Beyond 14 inches, forget the shoulder bag and go for a messenger or a proper backpack: 4.5 pounds hanging from one shoulder always gets paid for at the end of the day. A small bag, on the other hand, forgives nothing. Only the essentials go in, and that's rather the point.

One detail people think about too late is the number of pockets. A zipped back pocket, against your body, takes the wallet and puts off pickpockets. An open front pocket holds your transit card, which comes out twenty times a day. An inner pouch for earbuds and cards stops everything sinking to the bottom. Past four compartments, though, you spend more time searching than storing.

Leather, nylon or canvas: which material lasts?

Three materials share the shelf, and they don't age in the same way at all.

Full-grain leather is the only one that gets better with time. It develops a patina, takes the shape of what you carry and lasts ten years if you condition it twice a year. A leather crossbody labelled only "genuine leather" deserves suspicion: that's often coated split leather, which cracks after two winters. Pebbled leather resists scratches better than smooth, at the cost of looking a little less formal.

Technical nylon earned its place for a simple reason: it doesn't mind rain or knocks, and it weighs next to nothing. Ballistic nylon or thick Cordura ages well; thin, shiny nylon soon looks cheap. It's my pick for travel, because you can throw it into a suitcase without a second thought.

Cotton canvas, finally, has its charm in summer. It gets dirty fast, washes badly and won't survive a downpour without a watermark. Keep it for the weekend, with shorts or light chinos.

How to wear a crossbody bag for men without looking like a tourist

It all comes down to two adjustments: the side and the length. Worn across the chest, the bag sits on your chest or upper stomach with the strap snug, and it should land at navel height. On one shoulder, it can drop to the hip, not much further. The most common mistake by far is an adjustable strap left too long, so the bag bounces off your thigh.

A few combinations that work:

  • Weekend: black nylon sling, white t-shirt, raw denim and a pair of white sneakers. Bag in front, across the body, strap short.
  • Casual office: brown leather shoulder bag, oxford shirt, chinos and derbies. On one shoulder, so the shirt doesn't crease.
  • Travel: a belt bag or flat sling under an open jacket, holding passport and phone, so your hands stay free at the airport.

With a structured jacket, be careful. A thin strap across a blazer marks the lapel and pulls the shoulder out of shape. Wear the bag over the jacket on the opposite shoulder instead, or carry a flat sling by hand. With a coat, same logic: over it, never under, or you'll spend the day digging through three layers for your keys.

What colour for a first bag?

Black or dark brown. Black goes everywhere and forgives stains; brown warms up navy, beige or olive. The most useful rule is the leather one: the bag follows the colour of your belt and shoes, at least within the same family. A cognac bag with black derbies shows, and not in a good way. If you're unsure about pairings, the guide to matching colours in an outfit covers the basics.

Bright colours? Fine on a nylon bag, provided the rest of the outfit stays quiet. Khaki or midnight blue is a good middle ground if black feels too severe.

Signs of a bad buy

The giant logo first. A bag covered in the brand's signature dates in two seasons and draws attention to itself rather than to you. Then the hardware: flashy gold buckles and thin plastic zips break within the first year. Check that the zip runs without forcing and that the strap rings are metal, not painted plastic.

Last trap: a bag so stiff it won't stand up once empty, or so soft it sags like a shopping bag. Put it on the counter before you buy. It should hold its shape on its own.

Finally, look at the finishing, which is where serious makers show. Tight, even stitching, painted and smooth leather edges, a flap that closes easily with one hand: those signs don't lie. Turn the bag inside out too. A lining glued on crooked tells you about the rest.

How much should you spend?

For everyday use, the sweet spot between quality and lifespan sits around $70 to $140 for nylon and $170 to $400 for full-grain leather made in Europe. Under $45, you're mostly paying for this season's trend. Over $550, you're paying for the name. A $220 bag carried every day for five years works out at 12 cents a day, less than a $55 bag replaced every year. The same logic applies to the accessories that go with it, from your belt to your watch: few pieces, well chosen.

Frequently asked questions

Which side should a men's crossbody bag go on?

Across the chest, the strap goes over the shoulder of your dominant hand and the bag rests on the other side, at the front or slightly on the hip. That way you open it naturally with your good hand. On one shoulder only, use the side opposite the hand that usually holds your phone.

Can you wear a crossbody bag with a suit?

Yes, if it's a flat sling in smooth black or dark brown leather with no logo. Wear it over the jacket on one shoulder, or carry it by the handle, so it doesn't mark the lapel. A belt bag or a nylon pack, on the other hand, clashes with tailoring.

How do you care for a leather crossbody bag?

Dust it with a dry cloth every week, condition it with a colourless cream twice a year and never dry it next to a radiator after rain. Empty it now and then: a bag that's always overfilled stretches for good at the seams.

If you remember just one thing from this guide to the crossbody bag for men: keep the strap short. It's free, it takes ten seconds, and it's the difference between a man wearing a bag and a man putting up with one.
